Reiki

Reiki is a gentle but effective hands-on healing technique that works on mind body emotions and spirit.

What is Reiki?

reiki invernessThe Reiki healing technique was developed in Japan at the end of the nineteenth century by Dr Mikao Usui.

Reiki healing works with the body’s own energy. It stimulates the body’s own natural healing processes bringing balance to the body, the mind, the emotions and the spirit. It is thought that if any one of our systems should be out of balance this will over time result in illness. Reiki is deeply relaxing and can be used on its own for stress and relief of tension.

Quantum physics is starting to help us understand how Reiki works as scientists tell us at the smallest or quantum level that everything in this universe is made of energy and Reiki is the process of working with the energy of the body to bring balance.

During a treatment your own body will take the Reiki healing to where it is needed and your body will use the energy to heal itself in its own order.

People have reported that recent health problems or imbalances heal more quickly and problems or imbalances which have been established for some time will take longer. Normally more than one and usually three and possibly up to six sessions are required, but this is not a firm rule as everyone is different and even one session on its own is beneficial. We will discuss your needs in the first consultation and at any follow up treatments.

What happens in a Reiki session?

Using the knowledge gained as a qualified complementary therapist you will be asked in confidence for a short medical history in order that I may advise you if appropriate of any small changes you may want to make to assist your health and wellbeing.

You will then be asked to lie fully clothed on a couch and made comfortable with pillows and relaxing music.

I will then place my hands unobtrusively in a number of positions over your head and body whilst you relax. Most people say they experience a feeling of deep relaxation and some people can fall asleep for part of the treatment awaking with a feeling of relaxation.

What will you feel during the session?

People experience different pleasant sensations during a session and every session is different as your body draws what healing energy it needs to the area that requires it. This can be different each time we have a Reiki treatment as our body will always be in a constant state of change and will take what healing is needed at the time.

Most commonly people feel comforting heat and a feeling of relaxation. Other sensations can be of a light gentle pressure, tingling, or a feeling of gentle energy travelling through the body. Some people see different coloured lights or a gentle emotional release such as sighing or laughing and a feeling of wellbeing.

Aftercare advice

Most people report a feeling of relaxation and increased wellbeing. You may feel energised straight away. If you feel a little fatigued in the following hours, it is your body asking you to rest so it can put its energy into healing itself so you should listen and rest if possible. You will then feel rested or energised as this passes taking old symptoms with it. It is preferable not to plan any strenuous exercise for 24 hours after a treatment and if possible plan to take it easy for the rest of the day but it is generally fine to go about your normal day if necessary.

Drink plenty of water to aid the body’s detoxification process after the treatment. You should make note of any improvements to discuss at your next session.
